There was a time when minorities weren't acknowledged, there was no notion of it. A minority, what does that even meant? Until the time came and the whispers of complains turned into a loud voice of demands. Stablished groups of people, smaller groups had merged theirselves, fighting for a cause, their cause. whichever they could possibly be it was worth to be recognized.
During the existene of societies there has always existed a small group who shares something different to the rest of society, they are quiet until one day they wake up.
And then we wake up.
And then we think, that in fact, we are awake
until we wake up again and realize that there was something we hadn't repaired at and just when we think we have the whole picture... someone speaks up! pointing at something or someone that's worth to be seen, listen and respected.
As George Steiner and many other have said "what is not named does not exist".
They are hidden from our glance, human thing is, only when we found oursele¿vess struggling we raise our voice, such thing has happened durnig history: women, black people, indigenous in México, in the United States and probably in every nation, in which the poor, the ill, handicaps, victims of violence, among many other.
Will Kymlicka proposes giving minorities rights, we all human beings have different needs and minorities are groups of individuals, then specific rights designed to fit these need shall be created.
First of all. he says that in a society minorities need representation, for instance, remonting ourselves to some point in the ancient India when the philosophy of Budha arrived, a small group joined Budha's lifestyle, they probably related to his perspective of life, felt identified by his thinking, perhaps even inspired. Slowly, this small group evolved to bhudists and demanded visibility to be recognized as such, Not to any other group but followers of Budha's philosophy.
This first rigt strives for visbility for minorities to be seen in the national sphere and integrated in political issues
That being said, now we go to the next step in Will Kymlicka's mp of the Minority rights.
We return to our present time and we see it is very common for inmigrants to become a polyethnic state since they are are generally ethnic groups, On the other hand, national minorities are groups who share some or all of history, community, territory, language, or culture. It is highly possible for this groups to involuntarily become a minority through conquest, colonization, or expansion, howeve it could have voluntarily agreed to enter a federation with one or more other nations, peoples, or cultures. This is what Kymlicka describes as the Poyethnic right.
Last, we have the self-government were the oficillity of a minority has come to be recognized in a juridic paper, now they n are protected by the conventions that our society has created, for example indigenous people. Their rights are recognize and must be respected it is formal.
To this very day the world is still divdided, people still live in sectors. In our conception of reality we are a lot of the times and subconsciously clasified in; colors, religion, ideology, social classes and races. The legacy of fighting for human rights has helped to understand and value the differences from each other and to see this as an enrichment rather than as something to be scared of.
Through years of fight the before so tangible gap between groups has become more discrete thanks to the concept of multiculturalism and this has helped us to little by little remarke in those voices that are starting to whisper.
